After surfing the net for articles on Poker, I came across a handy site in the form of http://casinogambling.about.com which gives you helpful guides not only for beginners but also towards intermediate players.
Something I found particularly useful is the arrow chart found Here. It charts starting hands and when you should play them in the game.
Like learning the order of hands, this too is helpful in getting started. Other than that, it's important to know the weighting of your cards. I had a gentle start to the poker world playing games with friends with a few drinks, but this is valuable experience for when you play more seriously.
Although the style of play is very different, observing a few simple rules and common sense you can at least limit what you may lose if nothing else.
