Riverboat gambling is dead!
With the new laws that allow the boats to be permanently tied to shore, they are simply floating casinos that smell like the river and diesel fuel. How about a different approach?
When the casinos started 15 years ago, the downtowns were run down and hope was thin. We had quaint ideas of riverboat casinos that were kind and a family-oriented way to bring jobs and joy to the community. We had $5 bets with $200 loss limits.
Reality check. We now know casinos are not kind, gentle places. Gambling in the Quad-Cities is now limitless and here to stay.
What if Davenport could work with the state to move the Isle of Capri to the vacant River Center? The River Center is a bust for the city and will never come close to breaking even. The Isle already owns the Blackhawk hotel and they could remodel it or build a new one on the existing site.
Eagle lovers get their view, art lovers get a better view, and gamblers get rid of the rotten smells. |
